Shanghai Railway Station is called "The New Railway Station" by locals since it replaced Shanghai North Railway Station (also known as "Old North Railway Station", or "Old North Station" by locals) as the city's main train station in 1987. In the late 80's, the old North Railway Station was inadequate to handle the increasing railway traffic in Shanghai. The government then decided to pull down the Shanghai East (freight) Railway Station and build a new railway station at the same place. On 28 December 1987, the North Railway Station was closed. At the same time, the new Shanghai Railway Station was built and started its operation.

In 2006, some railway lines of the station were moved to the reopened Shanghai South Railway Station, which lessened the increasing pressure of passenger traffic. In August 2006, a decision was made to renovate the aging station and its surrounding area. Many new ticket machines were installed to increase efficiency.In June 2008, in order to co-operate with the opening of World Expo Shanghai 2010, Shanghai Government and Zhabei District carried out a new renovation called the "Shanghai Railway Station North Plaza Comprehensive Transportation Hub Project" with a total investment over 4.1 billion RMB.On May 29, 2010, the renovation was completed. It expanded the north building from 1,000 square meters to 15,560 square meters, refurbished the south building and added a new designed wave-shaped roof over the platform.

In late 2015, rumours of the demolition of the Shanghai Railway Station arose. Many locals had believed this because of the many residential developments and needlessness of the station as there is already the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station and the Shanghai West Railway Station. However, this rumour has been rejected by the Shanghai Municipal Government.

Shanghai Railway Station primarily serves north-south and westward locations. It is the terminus of the main Beijing-Shanghai railway line. There are two Z (non stop, deluxe) trains to Taiyuan and Xi'an every day. Most long-haul, non high-speed trains bound for Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province and the North (i.e. destinations north of the Yangzhe River) depart from Shanghai Railway Station. It also offers over 50 highspeed CRH trains to those areas every day.

It was built by Sir Victor Sassoon, of the Sassoon family, which built a Shanghai business and real estate empire in the early 20th century. He was a British Sephardic Jew of Iraqi origin, educated at Cambridge and Harrow. His family managed extensive business holdings in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Calcutta. Sassoon House was the first high-rise building built by Victor Sassoon, and one of the first skyscrapers in the Eastern Hemisphere. It was designed by architects Palmer and Turner, with a reinforced concrete structure. Construction began in 1926, and was completed in 1929.

The building occupies 4,617 square meters (15,148 square feet), and offers 36,317 square meters (119,150 square feet) of floor space. The building is ten stories in height, and the tenth floor is a penthouse, where Victor Sassoon once lived.The North Building is 77 meters (253 feet) high to the roofline, and 83 meters (272 feet) to the spire.

The builders followed a consistent art deco scheme, from exterior design to interior decor. Most of the building features granite facing, while the ninth floor and the roof are surfaced with terracotta. The eastern facade (facing the Huangpu River and the Bund) features a pyramidal roof with steep sides, and a height of about 10 meters (33 feet). The pyramid is faced with copper, which has corroded to light green.Banks and shops leased the ground floor space until 1949. This space became the Shanghai branch of Citibank in 2002. The fourth through ninth floors once housed the Cathay Hotel.

Similar to its counterpart to the north, the South Building was renovated in preparation for the 2010 World Expo. It emerged as the Swatch Art Peace Hotel.It hosts artists from around the world who live and work for a limited time in apartments/workshops. The heritage facade and public rooms of the building have been restored.

If you are arriving late from the airport and take the Maglev (for RMB 40 with discount by showing ticket) into town, there might not be taxi dispatchers at the Longyang Road station. At all times, the taxi drivers will be waiting on the upper platform to ask if you want a taxi. Never accept an offer on the platform. Take the escalator to the street to select your taxi from the dispatcher. If your driver does not want to use the meter use the word "Police" and either they use the meter or tell you that they dont know where the hotel is and will let you go. There will be always enough "good" drivers, even at night. Don't be afraid that you might not get a taxi to your hotel. Just make sure that you have the address of your hotel in Chinese printed out and its telephone number (in case the driver needs attention) before leaving home.

By and large, do not be afraid of taxis in Shanghai. The vast majority are honest and good drivers. Other than during Monday through Friday downtown, taxis might be the fastest way to go.
